When Thanksgiving Doesn't Feel Right

Last weekend I was involved in a horrific accident. I walked away physically unscathed. The other person did not. Right now a young man is in ICU in serious condition.

I'm very thankful for my family, my friends, my health, but I can't help but wonder how this young man's family is feeling this Thanksgiving.

If you would, please pray for my emotions and for this young man (Larry), that he'd fully recover.

For those of you on a mountain peak, may your Thanksgiving be wonderful and merry and full of good food. And to those of you in the valley right now, I feel you and hope you'll see a sunny spot where you can rest awhile. Perhaps finding a blessing to hold close until your journey brings you back to the mountain top.

Where are you right now? Have you ever been in a dark spot on a holiday? How did you end up leaving that place?

Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. This year is a tough one. Our daughter's October wedding was cancelled by the groom three weeks beforehand. This holiday is not how we dreamed of spending it.

My mother's birthday would have been today. Her birthday was always overshadowed because it was either before Thanksgiving or on Thanksgiving Day. This week tends to hold a tinge of sadness for us.

But we are thankful for grandchildren, for our daughter moving ahead, for opportunities for our children, for my sister's very first marriage at the ripe decade of her 40s and a new brother-in-law.

Jessica, you have my prayers of peace for you and healing prayers for the young man.

    Blessed Thanksgiving to all,

    Julie

  2. I think difficulties and crises that fall around the holidays are tough because they become forever associated with the holiday. I could barely celebrate Easter this year because of how awful our Easter in the ICU with my son was in 2010. It takes a long time to balance that bad memory out with a good one--if the balance ever comes. Still, that's where grace does its best work. Julie, I can't imagine the emotions around a cancelled wedding like that--I hope your daughter is healing, and that other good memories are on their way for this tender holiday season for you.

  6. Tragedy over the holidays always seems more difficult to bear. My mother died two days after Christmas. She and my father were visiting us at the time. Christmas had a bittersweet edge for a number of years following her death.

Prayers for you, Jessica, and for Larry, as well as Julie's daughter.

May this Thanksgiving be a special time to gather with friends and family and to tell them how much they mean to us.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!

  7. Jessica, I'm glad you were okay and will pray for the man who was hurt. My husband was in a car accident today that totaled his car. I am so thankful that, after an afternoon in the ER with him, he's okay. Nothing broken, cuts and bruises.
